“An Advance on Junior” submitted

Saturday, May 23rd, 2009

I submitted ‘An Advance on Junior’ to ClarkesWorld Magazine. It will almost certainly be rejected. But I figured to start with the publications that are SFWA/pro-pay and have quick turnarounds. Watching Black Adder and trying to enjoy the long weekend.

Update: Nope. On to the next one.
Update 2: Submitted it to Fantasy magazine. Should take about a week to get rejected. (5/24 pm)
Update 3: Only a day! I did get “We hope that you continue trying, however, and look forward to many more submissions.” Which is probably a form. Nonetheless. Time to look more closely at where it may fit. (5/25, pm)

The World is a Vampire

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

Wrote a formula describing the vast majority of science fiction stories. Gave the last of notes on the American Civil War. Made out test reviews and tests. Read several of the short essays in Rules of Thumb. Exercised on the elliptical for an half-hour minimum on 9 out of 11 days, with machine crunches each time. My legs are heavy, my stomach a little flatter. Listened to this year’s Hugo and Nebula short story nominees while exercising. Most are much better than the last two years. Delayed paying a ticket til after payday. Ate at two excellent places here, the new Albany Bistro and the remodeling Cafe 113. Assigned essays without grading the last stack. Have to make out an AP Test, exam review lists and finals. Need to take out trash and mow the grass. Have not written a lick.

Reading about writing

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

- Giving notes on the American Civil War and showing clips from the Ken Burns documentary.
- Re-read the first part of The Art of War.
- Got a copy of another writing book Rules of Thumb edited by Michael Martone, a well-known author and writing teacher (who now teaches at Alabama!)
- I read Cory Doctorow’s column in Locus.
- Time to edit and submit “An Ancient Bridge” to The Blackgate.

No six sentences

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Six sentences didn’t work out. Oh well. Re-read “Ancient Bridge”. It needs some work, I’ve decided. Blackgate opened up, and it’s the right market, so I need to clean it up. I’d be surprised if Heroic Fantasy Quarterly takes it in this state. It’s amazing how much you see when you look at something after a while away from it – repeated phrases, saying too much, that sort of thing. There are a couple of flash places for which I am aiming to write.
