Six sentences

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

I submitted my six sentence story, Wet Zone to, appropriately enough, ‘Six Sentences’. It’s how an exploration/first contact story might start.

I’ve been going through the lists trying to figure out where to submit “An Advance on Junior”, the second of my southern sci-fi short, short stories (2100 words). Trying to find a place that it fits. Of course, I just need to do it.

I’ve been reading The New Space Opera before bed and listening to Metatropolis while driving and exercising. Galactic empires and post-collapse community building. Both have had tremendous stories. It encourages me to write more and better.

Have had a toothache go on too long, making it hard to work on much of anything. Dentist on friday, finally.

No more waiting around

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Checked on several places at Duotrope’s Digest to submit my stories and enjoyed reading the ‘don’t submit this’ lists, especially at Strange Horizons. Of course, all the places I’d like to submit “An Advance on Junior” are the hardest places to get accepted.

Found a couple of cool places I hadn’t seen before – On the Premises Contests, Clonepod (more audio SF for the elliptical trainer), and Six Sentences, which I was aware of, but hadn’t seen. I think I’ll make writing something for both the ‘Premises’ contest and ’6S’ a priority.

I’m looking forward to Heroic Fantasy Quarterly, which will publish high fantasy short fiction. I submitted “The Ancient Bridge”, to go ahead and give that a shot.

“Expert”

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

I submitted a very short non-fiction essay (anecdote) to an online magazine Brevity, after being encouraged to do so by my friend, and accidental reader, Sarah. It’s one of my favorite stories about Army basic training and it’s entitled, “Expert”. It’s getting easier to submit. It’s not fear of rejection, I’ve gotten over that a long time ago. It’s more of a micromanaging issue. If I read it one more time I can pick out the perfect word that changes it from average to good. I’ll keep doing that, but I will submit. Damn it.

“Detention” editing

Monday, April 20th, 2009

I got some good feedback on “Detention” and I spent yesterday afternoon cleaning it up. (The rain kept me from planting my tomatoes.) There are at least a couple of good lines, and I think I’m going to reduce the the length of the opening, maybe even cut it back to flash length. Then I’ll find a place to send it off. I also wrote up one of my anecdotes from the Army about “smart privates” and will send it off a creative non-fiction site. Also redid this site for spring, even though we can’t seem to truly warm up around here.

Getting closer

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

Heard back from the editor where I submitted “Service”. It’s still alive! I’m pleased, but will continue to expect a rejection note.
