Good Morning M.E.,

I just wanted to drop you a note in thanks on your excellent presentation of the magazine. I received a lot of kind words on my story through personal e-mail, and many folks were just overwhelmed with the quality of the magazine.

I look forward to reading Redstone as it continues to grow, and also to encounter your work as you make inroads in the spec-fic community.

Take care...

- I can usually find the 'big 3' at Barnes & Noble, right after they come out. You can also buy them at fictionwise.com in a half-dozen formats - I occasionally download a PDF.
- I haven't been submitting to them because you actually have to send a hardcopy, instead of submitting online. I'm sure it serves as an effective barrier against random submissions.
- But don't worry, if one of them ever publishes one of my stories you'll all have fair warning and a long list of how to order a copy.

Thanks Sarah (<a href="http://hilltrash.wordpress.com/" rel="nofollow">her blog</a>). I know exactly what you mean - in this case I'm not looking for a Seinfeldian jerk to play off, but that seems to be a popular call. It'll stay as it is for now.
Since you willingly admit to being my friend your identity will no longer be withheld!

This is always a struggle. I have a story that I'm actually very pleased with, but the folk in my workshop and the very accomplished author who leads it all feel it needs more "tension." All of the ways in which tension might be added feel to me as if they make the characters unlikeable in what I think of as a sort of Seinfeldian way. But I also know and trust these readers, and greatly admire the work of the professor.

I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet, in all honesty. I may send it out as is, I may revise it and send it out BOTH ways and see which one gets accepted first, or I may revise it before sending it out. Until I know, I'm keeping it close by.

That said, if Cory Doctorow had an opinion on my work, I would probably follow it if for no other reason than that, when it was published, it would give me an excuse to send it to him with a thank you note!

Sarah, who thinks your writing rocks and happens to like Alchemy as it is, though she can also see the point that the others are making

I'm hoping that getting a few flash pieces accepted will indicate to short story publishers that someone actually likes my work enough to publish it.

That was generous of him to read it, and encouragement is always a good thing. I still have a few kind rejections from Weird Tales dating back to 12 years ago.

Mike,

It is a VERY good story. Don't let a few rejections get you down... Everyone gets them. Lots of them. Even for very good stories. But I am positive that you will also get a letter from someone who wants very much to publish it. And screw the ratio. You only need one!

Thanks for the note. I thought the audio quality was fine. I listened to 'Truth' , the '3 Gods' and read the 'Signal' story, just to make sure. I'm an unpublished neophyte author, so I hesitate criticizing people who have managed to get published. The quality the site and recordings were quite good, but I just didn't enjoy the stories.

Hey, just saw your post. We're still tweaking our approach to creating audio versions of the stories submitted to us at Hypersonic Tales. We've been looking for some honest feedback so we can tweak it in the right direction. If you could tell us why you were disappointed, that would help quite a bit. Thanks.

I never encourage people to write if they can't, in fact, write. Nothing is worse than asking a trusted friend a question and having that person lie to you, even if it is only to spare your feelings. I think it's cruel. Your stories are good and very, very publishable. If they weren't, I would have reminded you that you are a fabulous teacher, or King of the Power Shower, or something. But I would not have encouraged you to keep writing.

Peace!
